BREMMER

"Another drink, sir?"

I probably shouldn't…but after the day I've had.

"Sure," I grumble.

The bartender takes my empty glass and replaces it a few moments later with a fresh scotch on the rocks. I bring the tumbler to my lips and drain it all in one gulp.

Today has been a disaster of epic proportions. They say bad things come in threes, and boy, has that been the case today.

Clusterfuck number one: Quarterly earnings came out this morning. Australis underperformed. Big time.

It sparked a frenzy of panic among our board. Phillip spiraled into hysterics, reiterating over and over again just how much we need Ventura and his capital, now more than ever. How it's essential for not only future projects, but for current deals in development. How he can't possibly see a way out for us without him on board.

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Got it the first two hundred times, too.

So there's that.

Clusterfuck number two: I got into a fight with Dunlop over the Labrador development.

The land we're bidding on happens to house the aged care facility where Robbie's grandfather is living. It's not a done deal. There are still some zoning loopholes to overcome, but I'm confident we will.

According to Dunlop, this makes me a heartless prick and public enemy number one since it means the elderly residents will be displaced. Normally, like Clayton and me, he's able to draw a distinction between our professional endeavors and our personal lives. We've all grown up in this world. We know that what we say and how we act doing business doesn't reflect who we are as people. Sometimes, we need to be ruthless and make choices we wouldn't otherwise make.

But try telling him that. Since it involves Robbie's grandfather, he's totally lost objectivity. He'll cool off in time, but I never like fighting with my brothers. It leaves me on edge.

Clusterfuck number three: My golf session with Maren Ventura didn't go well.

At all.

That damn quarterly earnings report dominated the conversation, killing any chance I had at making progress on convincing him to see Australis as a viable investment.

I. Am. Beat.

"Hey there." Kelsey slides his hand over my shoulder before settling into the stool next to me. His face is bright and glowy.

"Hey there, yourself."

He flags down the bartender. "Something with bubbles, please."

"Coming right up."

A few moments later, with a flute of something fizzy in hand, Kelsey turns to me. His eyes roam over my face. "Bad day?"

"You could say that."

Kelsey frowns and grabs my arm as he leans over. "Just so that I can mentally prepare myself, it's not so bad that you're going to start dancing, is it?"

That makes me laugh, even though he's totally dissing my legendary dancing abilities. "No. There won't be any dancing. Not too much more drinking, either." I run my index finger around the rim of the glass. "Drinking isn't going to change a damn thing."

"How did golf go? Did you let Ventura win?"

"Of course. Made it look close, too, so he wouldn't suspect anything."

"And what about the business side of things? Is he going to invest?"

I shake my head, heaving out a breath.
